## Where it came from

The term Afrofuturism was coined by critic Mark Dery in 1993 to describe the speculative fiction and music of artists including Sun Ra, Octavia Butler and Samuel R. Delany. It draws on African cultural memory to imagine Black futures unconstrained by historical trauma. Visually it emerged through music — George Clinton's Parliament-Funkadelic space-funk, Erykah Badu's neo-soul aesthetics — and later through the visual world of Black Panther (2018) and Beyoncé's Lemonade (2016). Its palette draws on Pan-African colours and cosmic imagery.

## How to spot it

- Deep violet, rich gold and Pan-African green-red-gold palette
- Cosmic patterns: stars, orbits, galactic spirals
- Geometric patterns derived from African textile traditions (kente, kuba cloth)
- Bold, expressive display type with cultural presence

## Strengths

- Powerful visual identity with deep cultural resonance
- Colour palette is vibrant and unlike standard tech palettes
- Appeals to a generation that has made Afrofuturism mainstream culture

## Weaknesses

- Requires genuine cultural connection — misapplication is appropriation
- Palette intensity is hard to manage in dense data contexts
- Cosmic imagery is now somewhat co-opted by general dark-tech aesthetics

## In the wild

- Marvel's Black Panther visual world
- Solange Knowles's A Seat at the Table album art
- Janelle Monáe visual aesthetic

## Use it when

Black-led brands, cultural institutions, music and art projects with explicit Afrofuturist intent.
