## Where it came from

Cottagecore crystallised as a named aesthetic on Tumblr and TikTok around 2018–2020. The pandemic accelerated its spread as urban audiences romanticised quieter rural lives they couldn't access. Its visual language — botanical illustration, warm cream tones, handmade imperfection — maps directly from fashion and lifestyle photography into UI, appearing most often in food, wellness, and craft product design.

## How to spot it

- Warm cream, dusty sage, and blush pink palette
- Botanical and floral motifs in illustration and pattern
- Handmade quality — soft edges, organic shapes, gentle imperfection
- Generous whitespace and unhurried rhythm

## Strengths

- Warm, immediately comforting and emotionally inviting
- Strong visual identity without aggressive colour
- Maps naturally to food, wellness, craft, and homeware brands

## Weaknesses

- Very specific emotional register — wrong for technical or serious products
- Whitespace-heavy layouts fit poorly in dense data contexts
- Can veer into cliché if the botanical motifs become generic

## In the wild

- Artisan food and homeware brand websites
- Wellness app onboarding and lifestyle product marketing
- Small-batch maker and Etsy-seller storefronts

## Use it when

The product connects to nature, home, craft, or slow living — and warmth is more important than efficiency.
