## Where it came from

Named in 2017 by Sofi Xian of the Consumer Aesthetics Research Institute, after the humanist Frutiger typeface and Windows Aero glass, this aesthetic defined operating systems, consumer devices, and corporate software in the late 2000s. Windows Vista and 7 were its clearest expression — glossy taskbars, translucent glass window chrome, and stock imagery of water, bubbles, sky and green fields. It felt aspirational and clean before flat design declared it obsolete.

## How to spot it

- Translucent gloss overlays on saturated nature or sky backgrounds
- Aqua blues and fresh greens at high chroma
- Rounded shapes with multi-stop highlight gradients
- Clean humanist sans-serif typography, generous line height

## Strengths

- Warm and optimistic — makes software feel approachable
- Strong depth without full skeuomorphism
- Unmistakably evokes a specific, fondly remembered era

## Weaknesses

- Dated and kitsch to modern eyes
- Nature imagery is hard to adapt to serious contexts
- Glass and gradients add visual complexity

## In the wild

- Windows Vista and 7 Aero glass and default wallpapers
- Wii and Xbox 360 console menus
- Late-2000s corporate stock imagery of water, bubbles and sky

## Use it when

Nostalgia content, throwback campaigns, or anytime a late-2000s "clean tech" feeling is the point.
