## Where it came from

Ettore Sottsass founded the Memphis Group in Milan in December 1980, naming it after a Bob Dylan song playing on repeat that evening; its first show opened in 1981. Their furniture was covered in squiggly laminate patterns and clashing tiles. Critics were divided, but the debut drew huge crowds. Memphis was a rejection of cold Italian modernism and the earnestness of functionalism. The group dissolved in 1987 but its visual language lived on through 1980s graphics and returned via 2010s internet aesthetics and MTV-style branding.

## How to spot it

- Geometric squiggle patterns on flat surfaces — the signature move
- Clashing brights: hot pink, electric blue, cadmium yellow, black
- Asymmetric composition that deliberately breaks the grid
- Flat, bold, no gradients or shadows

## Strengths

- Unmistakable personality — nothing else looks quite like this
- Strong nostalgia signal for anyone who grew up in the 1980s
- Works as a controlled accent in an otherwise modern layout

## Weaknesses

- Exhausting at full intensity — very hard to read for long periods
- Strongly signals the 2010s-era revival of 1980s aesthetics
- Squiggle patterns are very hard to make feel fresh today

## In the wild

- Sottsass's Carlton bookcase
- MTV logo animations
- Fashion brand lookbooks, 2015–2020

## Use it when

A campaign or landing page that needs to feel playful, 80s-coded, and deliberately non-corporate.
