}Where it came from
Origin: Early 3D rendering, video game graphics, Delaunay triangulation art
Early 3D rendering created faceted, polygon-heavy meshes as a byproduct of limited computing power. When real-time rendering improved, artists began celebrating the polygon aesthetic deliberately. Low-poly became a popular flat-design complement on Dribbble and similar showcases in the early-to-mid 2010s, applied to landscapes, portraits, and abstract backgrounds. CSS clip-path later made triangulated geometric shapes achievable without images.
How to spot it
- Surfaces built from triangulated polygon meshes
- Flat fills per polygon — no gradients within a facet
- Cool palette: blues, teals, purples, with tonal variation across facets
- Geometric rigidity — no organic curves
Trade-offs
| Strengths | Weaknesses |
|---|---|
| Strong geometric identity, immediately recognisable | Peak trend period passed — can read as dated |
| Can be produced with CSS clip-path, no images needed | Hard to maintain across many differently-sized elements |
| Feels both retro and technical simultaneously | Cool palette can feel cold for consumer products |
In the wild
- Background illustrations for tech conference sites
- Avatar and portrait art with a geometric aesthetic
- Map and data visualisation styling
Use it when
The product is technical, geometric, or data-driven, and a cool-spectrum palette fits the brand.
