}Where it came from
Origin: Riso Kagaku Corporation stencil duplicator; indie publishing and zine culture
The Riso duplicator, introduced in the 1980s, became a staple of budget publishing — schools, churches, small offices. Indie publishers and zine makers adopted it in the 2000s for its distinct look: each ink colour is a separate drum pass, creating unavoidable misregistration between colours and a grainy, slightly translucent quality. Digital illustration now imitates this deliberately as an aesthetic signal of handmade craft.
How to spot it
- Deliberate colour misregistration — layers slightly offset from each other
- Coarse paper grain texture throughout
- Limited colour palette, typically two to four inks
- Semi-transparent ink overlap creates a third colour where layers cross
Trade-offs
| Strengths | Weaknesses |
|---|---|
| Immediately recognisable as handmade and independent | Very specific aesthetic — not suitable for all brands |
| Warm, tactile quality impossible to achieve with clean digital art | Grain and misregistration can reduce legibility |
| Suggests craft, authenticity, and small-batch production | Takes real discipline to look intentional rather than careless |
In the wild
- Independent zine and book cover design
- Music poster and album art for indie labels
- Editorial illustration for independent cultural publications
Use it when
The brand is independent, craft-focused, and cultural — and polish is the wrong signal.
