Windows 95
Bevelled 3D frames, chunky grey system buttons, tight bitmap fonts, and the classic title-bar gradient — the look that defined computing for a generation.

}Where it came from
Origin: Microsoft Windows 95, 98, and early 2000s
Windows 95 introduced a visual language that most of the world's early computer users learned on: raised and sunken bevels, the Start button and the taskbar. Every button edge used four shades — white highlight, light grey, dark grey, and black shadow — creating a convincing embossed effect from a minimal palette. This system ran on most of the world’s PCs through the late 1990s.
How to spot it
- 3D embossed and inset borders — white, light grey, dark grey, black
- System grey base, close in value to oklch(75% 0 0)
- Bitmap or tight sans-serif system fonts (Tahoma, MS Sans Serif)
- Title bar gradient and scroll bars as interaction affordances
Trade-offs
| Strengths | Weaknesses |
|---|---|
| Maximum nostalgia for a specific generation | Very dated — reads as retro parody |
| Immediately recognisable interaction affordances | Low colour fidelity on modern displays |
| Unique and distinctive when used deliberately | Tiny bitmap fonts reduce readability |
In the wild
- Windows 95 and 98 desktop and applications
- Internet Explorer 4 and 5 UI chrome
- Early web design using system colours
Use it when
Retro art projects, tech nostalgia, or contexts where the irony is intentional.
