Dieter Rams
"Good design is as little design as possible." Warm white and grey, a grotesque typeface, and one pure-hue function accent — nothing without purpose.

}Where it came from
Origin: Braun AG industrial design, Germany, 1955–1990s
Dieter Rams joined Braun in 1955 and led its design department from 1961 into the 1990s, producing radios, calculators, and hi-fi systems that defined functional beauty. His ten principles — including "good design is honest," "as little design as possible," and "good design is long-lasting" — influenced a generation of software designers. Jonathan Ive cited him as a direct reference for early Apple product design, and his influence is often noted in hardware such as Teenage Engineering's OP-1.
How to spot it
- Warm white or cream body with grey-toned aluminium-like accents
- Helvetica or equivalent grotesque — never decorative type
- One pure-hue functional accent, often orange, red, or signal green
- Strict grid: every element earns its place, negative space is intentional
Trade-offs
| Strengths | Weaknesses |
|---|---|
| Timeless — resists trend cycles because it references function, not fashion | Can feel clinical or cold in emotional consumer contexts |
| Extremely clear visual hierarchy | Requires strict discipline to maintain — easy to add one element too many |
| Honest communication: the form follows and reveals the function | Minimal colour palette limits brand expression |
In the wild
- Braun T3 pocket radio
- Braun ET 66 calculator
- Vitsœ 606 Universal Shelving System
