Maximalism
More is more: layered patterns, clashing colours, dense typography, and every surface doing something — a deliberate rejection of minimalist restraint.

}Where it came from
Origin: Reaction against minimal design, fashion and interior design crossover
Maximalism arrived as a counter-movement to the decade of flat minimal design. Influenced by fashion (Versace's baroque prints, Alessandro Michele's Gucci era) and interior design, it moved into graphic and UI design as designers and brands sought to stand out in a sea of sameness. The guiding principle is that empty space is wasted space.
How to spot it
- Dense layering of pattern, colour, and type
- Multiple typefaces and sizes in a single composition
- No empty space — every surface decorated
- Clashing but intentional colour combinations
Trade-offs
| Strengths | Weaknesses |
|---|---|
| Impossible to ignore — creates strong brand recall | High cognitive load — exhausting at scale |
| Expressive and personality-driven | Very hard to execute without looking accidental |
| Excellent for fashion, culture, and entertainment | Fails completely for utility or information-dense products |
In the wild
- Alessandro Michele era Gucci branding
- Virgil Abloh OFF-WHITE graphic language
- Dazed and Confused magazine editorial design
Use it when
Fashion, culture, editorial, or luxury brands where visual excess is the point.
