}Where it came from
Origin: Italian anti-design movement, early internet aesthetics, zine culture
Italian anti-design designers in the 1960s and 1970s challenged functionalist orthodoxy with deliberately difficult, ugly, and ironic objects. Graphic designer David Carson brought it to mainstream print in the 1990s through Ray Gun magazine — setting unreadable type, destroying grids, and making design that felt raw and aggressive. Early web design's naivety became aesthetic on the "brutalist web" revival.
How to spot it
- Deliberately "wrong" typography — Comic Sans, misaligned, tiny or huge
- Clashing colours without regard for readability
- No grid, or an aggressively broken one
- Raw, unfinished surface quality
Trade-offs
| Strengths | Weaknesses |
|---|---|
| Extremely distinctive and unmistakable | Accessibility problems are severe by design |
| Powerful as commentary or artistic statement | Very hard to use for anything functional |
| Memorable precisely because it violates expectations | Reads as mistake rather than intent without context |
In the wild
- David Carson's Ray Gun magazine layouts
- Early 1990s grunge graphic design
- Brutalist web revival sites, 2017–present
