}Where it came from
Origin: Acid house music graphics, rave flyers, psychedelic poster art
Acid house exploded from Chicago in the mid-to-late 1980s, spreading to the UK and Europe. Rave flyers became a design genre: photocopied, fluorescent, chaotic, and illegal-feeling. The smiley face, the Roland TB-303 acid bassline, and day-glo colour became the iconography. The aesthetic resurfaced in 2010s streetwear and again in early-2020s digital design, finding new life in fashion and tech.
How to spot it
- Screaming lime green, hot pink, and black-yellow palette
- Smiley faces, warped type, and fluorescent fills
- Chaotic layout with overlapping elements
- Photocopied or riso-print texture quality
Trade-offs
| Strengths | Weaknesses |
|---|---|
| High-energy and impossible to ignore | Very specific subculture reference |
| Strong cultural resonance for music and nightlife | Near-hostile readability in full execution |
| Easily adapted to bold digital design | Lime-on-black or pink-on-black can strain eyes |
In the wild
- UK acid house rave flyers, 1988–1989
- 2010s streetwear graphics
- i-D magazine covers and editorial design
